About
Technique
Matthew creates his glass art
using an ancient process known as lampworking, or flame working. This
technique was originally pioneered by ancient Egyptian civilizations nearly
5000 years ago. Today, Matthew uses a highly efficient gas/oxygen bench
mounted torch to melt raw glass to workable temperatures reaching 2000of.
He primarily works with borosilicate glass, also known as Pyrex, because
the glass is very resistant to thermal and physical shock. As for specific
techniques used to decorate and shape the glass, Matthew combines numerous
glass working techniques from around the world. Once a glass creation is
complete, it goes directly into an annealing oven, or kiln, to ensure
additional strength and durability. Matt does not use molds of any kind;
each piece he creates will be unique.
