About
Technique
Using
3000 degrees of heat, Matthew manipulates molten glass rods and tubes
over an open flame. The process is known as lampworking, or
flameworking, and dates back nearly 5000 years to ancient Egypt. Today,
Matthew uses a highly efficient gas-oxygen torch to melt raw glass. The
artist works with borosilicate, or Pyrex, glass because the material is
extremely versatile and is one of the strongest types glass
commercially available.
As for specific techniques used to decorate and shape the glass,
Matthew combines numerous glass working techniques that he has learned
from around the world. He also uses many unique techniques that he has
developed on his own through years of experimentation. Because every
piece is crafted by hand, no two pieces will ever be identical.
